Doge's Palace, Venice

#1 of 76 in Museums in Venice
Take a behind-the-scenes look at how Venice used to be run at Doge's Palace, which once served as the residence of the doges, the city's chief magistrates. Regarded as a masterpiece of Venetian Gothic architecture, the palace is now a popular museum, attracting more than 1 million visitors each year. Works by such artists as Titian, Veronese, Tiepolo, and Tintoretto fill the interior. You can explore the monumental council chambers and richly decorated residential suites where major decisions affecting the city's fate were once made. Look in on the grim prison cells where the doges' political opponents were often locked away. A ticket for the nearby museums also grants access to this palace. Explore your ticket options online, and book well in advance to avoid standing in long lines. Our Venice trip itinerary planner makes visiting Doge's Palace and other Venice attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Tintoretto overload. Well organised and signed route through the palace - although the signs at the queues out front need improvement. We couldn't see the small signs to join the middle queue as we al...  more »

  • A place that leaves you speechless! It's like one of those movies of ancient Venice. It's huge and it takes a while to visit, then rabbit to go there early in the morning and see him calmly, preferably with an audioguide. We had booked our tickets before so we cut the line (I recommend!). There is a path leading in boardrooms before and in the Armory and prisons then, also going to the bridge of sighs! I will definitely visit this time also the secret passages and gli alloggi del duca, who had a ticket.

  • Amazingly beautiful. The museum part cost extra on top of the entrance fee. You get to cross the bridge of sighs, see the largest room in the EU, all the history there was amazing. This is for sure somewhere you must visit if you travel to Venice! Just get a skip the line during the summer or go early in the morning. A+ all the way!
  • Great sight to see while in Venice. Can cross over the Bridge of Sighs from inside here. Hundreds of paintings to admire if you're into that kind of thing. Has an armoury and each room has a plaque which explains what it's function was in the old venetian state.
  • Go on the secret tour, it's fascinating. This wasn't just a palace but a working office with prison and torture chamber! The public rooms are amazing. You can see the wealth of Venice for hundreds of years.
  • Spent a good amount of time here admiring the art work and architecture and getting to grips with the history. Would have spent longer if we'd been able to get an audio guide, but as it was Easter weekend, there were none available as it was very very busy! One of Venice's must see attractions.
  • Amazing place but I recommend the following: 1. Buy your tickets beforehand. Buying tickets will cost you at least 20min wait in a line filled with frustrated folks. 2. Take a guide (audio guide, book or actual guide) because the explanation on site are limited. Otherwise a must see..
