Vatican Museums, Vatican City

4.2
#1 of 310 in Museums in Lazio
The easiest way to experience Vatican Museums, featuring an outstanding collection of fine art, is by joining a guided tour. These museums display works from an immense collection that the Roman Catholic church built up over several centuries. You can see some of the most renowned Classical sculptures in the world, as well as numerous Renaissance art masterpieces. Founded in the early 16th century by Pope Julius II, the museums contain 54 galleries. The last stop and a highlight of every tour is the Sistine Chapel, featuring the world-famous ceiling decorated by Michelangelo. You are not required to join a tour, but the collection is spread over an area of nearly 15 km (9 mi), so it's highly recommended. Look online beforehand to choose from many different tour options. • The Vatican museums are a must. The challenge is the crowds. Each room I entered, I hoped the crowds would disperse- we didn’t visit on a weekend or a holiday and it was overwhelming. We had a wonderf...  more »
  • The best way to see the Vatican Museum is on a guided tour. If you don't already have a tour, book a private tour in Rome and avoid an hours long line. Security is tight so be prepared for metal detec...  more »
  • Wow! That’s the kind of reaction you have as you wander through the Vatican Museums. So many beautiful artworks to appreciate (even for those non art lovers!). Statues, sculptures, tapestries, paintin...  more »

  • Amazing art! I went with a tour and was able to skip the lengthy lines and learn about the art works displayed which was awesome. The Sistine Chapel gets absolutely packed like a can of sardines but it is a must, the labour that went into painting the ceiling is just amazing. Make sure to wear comfy shoes as there’s a lot to see and come early morning to try and avoid the lines and crowds
  • Beautiful! The place is just amazing. We had a good guide, who knew his stuff. Beware though, it can take a long time. Leave yourself at least 4 hours! There is so much to see. The Sistine chapel is jam packed but you can manoeuvre around. Try and get under the middle of the ceiling (the Adam picture) and you get a good view of it all from there
  • Amazing place full of plenty of ancient history and art. There is so much to see, so I would recommend eating before you go! It can take some time to walk around everything, especially since you will be walking extremely slowly as you get near the Sistine chapel. This is due the amount of people that want to see it of course... so just be prepared to feel like an animal for a little while! Definitely do it though, it's well worth seeing once you're in there! One last tip... don't forget to BOOK ONLINE before you go. The line is absolutely huge if you haven't booked your tickets... you have been warned :)
  • Had a wonderful tour of the Vatican Museum and St. Peter's Basilica. It is best to book with a guide. It easy to get lost in all the marvelous displays. We were lucky to have an informative and entertaining guide, Maria Teresa, who provided history, humour, personal stories and sincere care for our group. Her son is a priest and at the end of the tour, she showed us his photo and video singing while facilitating a mass. Buy tickets from the official website. It is cheaper, has a special entrance and there's no queue at all. I got there 15 minutes before the schedule and I still had time to eat snacks and freshen up. After the tour, you may also want to go up the dome. It may be reached through stairs with about 550 steps (€8) or through elevator (€10). The view is worth the climb and extra fee.
  • You need to book before you go. The museums are vast and sprawling. It was very crowded but well worth the visit. The Sistine Chapel is beautiful. But walk through the art gallery just before you reach the chapel, you will discover some beautiful masterpieces by well known painters.
