Duomo di Salerno, Salerno

4.6
Duomo di Salerno, the main church of Salerno, contains the crypt that holds the remains of St. Matthew. The church was built over an earlier church, which was in turn built on Roman ruins. Behind the deceptively simple façade of the cathedral lies an ornate crypt, displays of golden altarpieces, tile mosaics, and the tomb of Pope Gregory VII. From the outside, admire the bronze Byzantine-style doors from Constantinople. The 12th-century Arabic-Norman bell tower stands watch at 56 m (184 ft) high. • A surreal experience. View the details of your decoration made in marble cut into their ealhes, paintings in minimum very interesting frescoes. Worth a visit.

  • From outside is not really a good impression but, crossed the threshold, you log on to a magnificent Loggia that crossed, leads to the entrance to the Church. Nice Interior and especially the dome of the apse, but the highlight is the crypt, which is accessed by offering 1 euro, which is just wonderful! In it are the remains of St Matthew.

  • Absolutely incredible experience, especially the crypt of St Mathew. In the main church a very unobtrusive stairway leads you to the crypt - don’t miss it! It’s amazing and I’ve seen all of the well noted churches and mosques but this is truly one of a kind.
  • Although this Cathedral badly suffered in the earthquake in XVII century it still remains stunning cultural and historical monument of Norman culture. Here you can venerate Holy Relics of Saint Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist. Visitors are allowed to take non commercial photo without flash light and tripod.
  • Definitely worth to see. Makes great impression. A pity we couldnt go up on the tower
  • In the seventeenth century a serious effort has been done to spoil this beauty. In vain. The atrium is incomparable. The tower lovely. Splendid pulpits. Many other fascinating details. Please notice the lions at the entrance of the atrium, the left one a lioness, feeding her pup. The crypt, I'm afraid, is beyond repair.
  • Tranquile and beautiful
