Museo Cappella Sansevero, Naples

A treasure chest of art and science, Museo Cappella Sansevero houses almost 30 significant works of art, among which are three notable late-Baroque statues. These intriguing sculptures were created with a marble-like substance known for its tissue-like quality, invented by Raimondo di Sangro, a prominent inventor and scientist. He spent the last years of his life reconstructing and decorating this chapel. Arguably the site's most notable piece, a sculpture of Christ covered with a thin shroud is a masterpiece created by Giuseppe Sanmartino, a distinguished sculptor of the Baroque period. The chapel also contains an exhibit of anatomical models of a mature man and a pregnant woman, their skeletons encased in hardened arteries and veins made of beeswax, iron wire, and silk. Tickets can be purchased on site, but if you want to avoid a long wait, book online well in advance. • I had a very pleasant surprise when I entered in this museum...One of the most great opera from the world, and also the other sculptors...rarely I was so impressed by such beaty art...  more »
  • One of the most fascinating places of Naples: the Sansevero Chapel. Absolutely a must not to be missed during a daily tour in town, it can be easily matched to a stroll downtown (be sure to visit the nearby San Domenico complex). The visit you can book or just make tickets in front of the entrance to the Chapel and make a row that lasts a few minutes (or at least we were lucky). As you enter the show before our eyes is awesome, explanatory signs and brochures that deliver along with the ticket helps you to orientate in a spiritual and artistic Masonic studied in detail, starting from the statues placed on perimeter of the chapel until the most important piece here, the wonderful statue of the veiled Christ, placed in front of the presbytery. It's really impressive way ahead and admire it in silence, too bad you can't take photos. The visit continues in the lounge downstairs, which houses the spectacular anatomical machines. From this room you leave the tour without turning back (but the guardian warns). Dont miss it!

  • The veiled Christ is creepy beauty! The veil is so realistic that looks real and Christ at times seems to breathe. To see without a doubt.

  • A church that outside is like a local house but inside there are hidden treasures. The veiled Christ is in the centre and is marvellous. The other statues are also beautiful hand curved (statue of Disillusion - the man inside a net- is also marvellous). The Anatomical machines with artery and vein systems almost perfectly intact at the underground chamber are also impressive. Especially if you read the story about them. The all experience of this church is a little bit creepy but is a must see at Naples. The only things that bothered me are that they don't allow pictures inside and that the entrance ticket is a little bit expensive for a such a small church.
  • Small but beautiful. The veilled Christ was nice, but the statue with the fishing net behind it was astonishing - don't forget to look at the other marble work on display.
  • Well worth to see the veiled Christ. Worth paying the small amount extra and getting the audio guide. Queues start early.
  • Was a good experience it thought i was enter to another church momument but instead i really enjoy my visit there. Totally recomended.
  • Simply the best of Naples, Italy! Check the marvelous Jesus Christ you have inside, among incredible fine arts in stone! Unfortunately, it is not allowed to take photos inside.
