Duomo di Milano, Milan

4.7
#1 of 5,039 in Things to do in Lombardy
The fifth-largest cathedral in the world, Duomo di Milano is a marvel of Gothic architecture. Climb up to the roof and enjoy arguably the most spectacular views of the city, visible between the cathedral's Gothic spires. Constructed between 1386 and 1965, this massive church is known for its white marble, hundreds of spires, thousands of statues on its exterior, and a buttressed facade. You can take photos inside the cathedral if you buy a special wristband at the entrance. You can reach the roof, which is open during daylight hours, via elevator or 250 stairs. Make advance reservations if you'd like a guided sunset tour of the spires. • If you want to see the best part of Milano, just go to Duomo. Located in the top city center, the building is really suggestive. Unfortunatelly, we didn't have time to pay for tickets to go inside and...  more »

  • The cathedral is beautiful from the outside. Would rate this 4 or 5 stars had we not paid for the fast track. We waited 20 minutes in line to get in and 30 minutes so far to get into the single elevator that takes you down. The view is nice from the terrace but not sure the short time up there is worth the extra hour or so of waiting to go up and down the elevator. We’re not sure yet about the inside since we’ve been waiting at the terrace level for awhile.
  • Magnificent! The details are breathtaking. If you manage to get to the Duomo, enjoy the scenery while you are having an ice cream. The are public restrooms besides Duomo. The queue for visiting the interior part can get long. There are also two other lines for getting to the top and having a birds-eye-view. One with an elevator and the other one is simply by the stairs! And guess what, the elevator has a long queue! The vendors at the street in front of Duomo can be very annoying. Completely deny them and don't believe a single word that they say! That is just guerrilla marketing!
  • Beautiful... I was amazed it was absolutely beautiful the work that has gone into it is amazing. We did the Duomo, museum and terrace in one package all brilliant and I would definitely recommend you visit this if your in Milano. The queue to the Duomo moved very quick they do a bag search and a quick body scan on entry. Museum is not that big but worth visiting. The terraces... the queue for this also move quite quick. we took the lift option, it only lets 8/10 people in at one time so you do have to be patient. Once your up there the views are amazing. Some steps to get you right to the top, and in places it’s single file walk ways. Well worth visiting.
  • When Jesus said to Peter “on this rock you will build my church”. Jesus always spoke in *parables*. He meant on this rock, the rock being strong enough to sustain anything, my church will be built, he did not say to build churches of wood, he meant that the churches (the human body) will be his church, humans believing in his words. You can’t bring material things with you when you die, no church, no religion will ever follow you into death. The HUMAN body and its brain are the MOST important thing Jesus ever teaches us about, our *conscience* tells us right from wrong, the ego and the ID. Jesus was LOVE, how do you feel that love?, with your HUMAN soul, you cannot touch that love, it is invisible to the eye, LOVE is so empowering, that is what Jesus was trying to teach us, God LOVES us beyond the LOVE we feel for any human being. Think of the person whom you love the most, feel that feeling of LOVE and know that God loves you more than that. When you pray, don’t pray with monotonous, repetitious words, feel the love for God and then talk to God, he is waiting for you. He will slowly show you the way, he is divine patience and we have to learn to be patient also. Tell your sins to anybody that surrounds you, but speak about it aloud, and know that you are forgiven.
  • This review may be biased as my father is Milanese however; I believe I can be impartial. The Duomo is a looking glass into the past. Taking centuries to build, standing in the piazza it dominates everything nearby showing off it's colossal structure and dwarfing most churches that I can think of. The journey to the top where we got to take photos and walk along the roof is definitely something I would recommend and as it was my partner's first time she thoroughly enjoyed it too. Nearby are many restaurants as well as La Galleria which is famous in its own right with many high street brands such as Versacce, D&G and Chanel.
