The Baptistery of St. John, Florence

4.7
The Baptistery of St. John is one of the oldest buildings in the city, constructed between 1059 and 1128. It's renowned for the three sets of bronze doors. Observe how the eight lower panels of the south doors depict the virtues of hope, faith, charity, humility, fortitude, temperance, justice, and prudence. The most famous set, the east doors, are a copy; the originals are being preserved in the Duomo's museum. You still get a sense of their importance and you can admire the depiction of "The Story of Joseph." Inside the baptistery, be sure to look up at the domed, mosaic ceiling. • Fabulous ceiling and not much more, but it is probably a thing to do while in the city so you are not left wondering about what the interior is like.  more »
  • With other monuments not to be missed. €15 the ticket for all visit. I fell in love with this city.

  • Beautifully made, and architecturally amazing. You cannot miss the Baptistery of St. John if you visit Florence. Florence has many beautiful landmarks, but this cathedral has to be one of my all-time favourites. The area surrounding the cathedral is packed to the rim with tourists and it does get annoying, every couple of minutes there will be a massive tour group which happen to stand exactly where you are…there is no escaping! Apart from the tourist, the next top mass of people you will see is the security services, armed to the teeth and to be honest, quite scary. Somehow, even though they are necessary, this all does ruin part of the trip/experience. Italy in general has lots of history and it is worth joining a tour group to learn some of the history. I done this the first time when visiting Florence and am glad I did, as this recent trip I was able to explain part of Florence’s history to my girlfriend who was on her first visit to Florence. Overall, if you put aside the tourists and police, Florence is historically flawless. Every visit feels like a history lesson and the food is second to none, expect to spend some cash as most places are expensive to eat at!
  • Certainly a must see as you will see the Cathedral. The doors are amazing and you will want to see them. Most people don't really understand that much of this area, architecture, sculpture, paintings, metal work was completed nearly 500 years ago, right after the Medieval period where this type of art wasn't commonly practiced at least not since the Greeks and perhaps the Romans. It is simply mind boggling to appreciate what these artists were able to accomplish.
  • The first thing that we noticed immediately upon entrance was how quiet it was when compared to all the hustle and bustle outside. The walls are so thick and it is so dark inside that you are completely removed from the experiences outside. Then you sit on a bench and admire all the mosaic artwork everywhere, especially the ceilings. Take a deep breath, relax and meditate, pray or whatever suites your fancy. Then when you leave you appreciate that experience that much more when all the noise, confusion and somewhat chaotic tourism surrounding the Piazza greets you. Recommended and challenge anyone to stay more than 30 minutes inside. :) Thanks for reading.
  • Very Pretty. The original doors are in the Museum.
  • Quite incredible inside and out although a copy the "Gate to Paradise" is remarkable, original is in the museum, the original door is awe inspiring. Inside I had no idea what to expect. And this ceiling is exquisite and the work that had gone in to this is world class.
