The Wall of Tears, Puerto Villamil

On a tour of Isabella Island, visit The Wall of Tears, a grim historical site that local legend says still emanates cries. Built by the island's penal colony from 1945 to 1959, the wall reportedly caused thousands of deaths of prisoners, who were forced to carry stones in the sweltering heat and isolation for days on end. Trek the scenic 7 km (4.3 mi) path, lined with mangroves, and you might spot some giant tortoises or other interesting Galapagos species along the way. • You think the top of the wall, noup, it is the top of the hill that goes up from the Wall of Tears. This historical monument gives you chills when you see it and realize all the effort these people ma...  more »
  • Impressive wall with a sad background. Should you have seen. With the bike about an hour welcoming on sand and gravel roads with some small attractions such as turtles and Flamigos. I advise early tomorrow to go on the tour because of the Sun.

  • The wall is a regretful monument/event in Galapagos' history. The saying is “The strong cried and the weak died". It is definitely a long walk (45 minutes to an hour). Using a bike would be a bit bett...  more »

  • The wall is impressive for its historical meaning and has a strong impact on the visitor. But it is the walk/run/cycle all the way there that impresses the most. Beautiful beaches, lovely lakes, wonderful wildlife, and giant tortoises! Personally, I would recommend hiring a bicycle and enjoy the way there. Careful with the sand banks though!
  • A nice shirt bike ride with high chances of encounters with giant wild tortoises and a beautiful landscape.
  • After 5km of walking or biking as most people do you will reach the wall of tears. The wall isn't protected but it has history so respect it. You can carry on for a higher lookout to the old USA radar which give a nice view point on the crater, volcano and beach. I would recommend to do this trail (free)
  • Sad story but amazing trip. Recommended to rent a bike to reach there!
  • A must see when visiting Puerto Villamil. Rent a bike from a local shop or make the journey by foot. We rented bikes for $3/hour and made the entire trip in a little more than two hours. Make sure to stop by Cerro Ochillo on your way to see a 360 spectacular view.
